Two Men Arrested in Killing of Fisk University Basketball Player Andre Bell

UPDATE: Five months after the tragic death of Fisk University basketball player Andre Bell, authorities have arrested two men accused of killing the 20-year-old student-athlete in what police say was a jealousy-fueled attack.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, 19-year-old Brayden Carter and 18-year-old Damarion Coleman have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Bell’s January shooting death. Investigators say the suspects targeted Bell because of jealousy involving Carter’s girlfriend, who was a member of a university gymnastics team. Police allege Carter was upset that other young men, including Bell and his friends, spoke with her during events.

Bell, a sophomore business administration major and standout basketball player at Fisk University, was driving on Interstate 65 in Nashville on January 11 after attending a university gymnastics event with friends when shots were fired into his vehicle. Bell was struck in the head and later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

Police said a lengthy investigation involving cellphone data, witness statements, and other evidence led detectives to Carter and Coleman. Authorities believe the pair intended to intimidate Bell and his friends but instead carried out a deadly attack. Carter was arrested during a traffic stop in Murfreesboro, where investigators recovered a pistol. Coleman was later taken into custody at his home by SWAT officers.

Both suspects face multiple charges, including first-degree murder. Carter is also facing additional firearm-related charges. Coleman, who was a minor at the time of the shooting, is expected to face proceedings through the juvenile court system.

The arrests have brought some relief to Bell’s family, friends, and teammates, who have spent months grieving the loss of a young man remembered for his leadership, kindness, and impact on the Fisk basketball program. However, loved ones say the arrests do not erase the pain caused by his death.

Bell’s death sent shockwaves through the Fisk University community and the broader HBCU sports world. Coaches, teammates, and university officials described him as a talented athlete, dedicated student, and positive influence both on and off the court.

The case remains under investigation as prosecutors prepare to move forward with the murder charges.
