North Carolina Teacher Killed After High-Speed Police Chase Ends In Deadly Crash

A North Carolina teacher was tragically killed after a high-speed police chase ended in a deadly crash at an Atlanta gas station over Memorial Day weekend, according to reports.

Authorities said 51-year-old Chatanna Patterson, a math and robotics teacher from North Carolina, was visiting family in Atlanta when the fatal incident occurred. Georgia State Patrol troopers reportedly attempted to stop a speeding vehicle driven by Fre’shum Thai White, who was allegedly traveling nearly 90 mph in a 55 mph zone before leading officers on a dangerous pursuit.

The chase came to a violent end at a Shell gas station on Hill Street in southeast Atlanta after White allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Patterson while she stood near her sister’s car. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister, Heather Patterson, along with White and another passenger, suffered injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Family members are now demanding changes to police pursuit policies, questioning whether the chase should have continued given the rainy conditions and public safety concerns.

“When do you stop putting people on high-speed chases?” Patterson’s grieving family reportedly asked following the tragedy.

The heartbreaking loss has renewed conversations surrounding police pursuit reform in Georgia. Reports noted that the Atlanta City Council previously approved a resolution encouraging statewide reforms aimed at reducing dangers linked to high-speed pursuits.

Patterson is being remembered by loved ones and community members as a dedicated educator whose life was cut short far too soon.
