North Carolina Man Dead After Being In Police Custody

Sad news in the Raleigh, North Carolina community.

A man who died while in the custody of the Raleigh Police Department has been identified as Darryl Williams.

The 32-year-old died on Tuesday morning after the officers used a taser to detain him in order to make an arrest.

According to WRAL news, the incident occurred around 2 am on Tuesday morning. Officers patrolling the area noticed a suspicious vehicle outside a sweepstakes parlor on Rock Quarry Road.

RPD Officers then found Williams in the car and decided to make an arrest for an undisclosed reason.

During the attempt to arrest Williams, he resisted arrest and ran towards the woods, according to Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson. Officers then used a taser after catching up with Williams.

“Officers were then able to get the individual into custody and handcuffs — where he later became unresponsive,” Patterson said.

“Our officers did provide life-saving measures, and EMS was called.

“The individual was transported to the hospital, where he later died.”

Williams’ Mother, Sonya Williams, spoke to WRAL and said “He had so many friends,” and “[He was] loved by so many.”.

She said she deserved an explanation from the police about what happened.

“That’s what’s making me so upset because they’re not telling me anything. So they’re trying to hide something,” she said.

The RPD police chief said that there is an ongoing investigation and that the 6 officers involved have been placed on administration leave. This is a standard procedure when there is an in-custody death or an officer-involved shooting.
