Born in Berkeley, California, Franklin displayed extraordinary musical talent from an early age. He began taking jazz piano lessons at just six years old under the guidance of renowned jazz educator Dr. Herb Wong. By the age of 14, he was already leading his own funk-jazz band, In One Piece, and performing professionally around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Franklin signed with CBS Records in 1978 and released his debut album, In the Center, introducing audiences to his signature blend of jazz, funk, and soul. However, it was his 1980 album You’ll Never Know that catapulted him to international recognition.
Its breakout single, “The Groove,” became Franklin’s biggest hit, reaching No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and sparking a popular dance craze known as “The Freeze.” The song remains a beloved classic among jazz-funk enthusiasts more than four decades after its release.
Throughout the 1980s, Franklin continued to release a string of successful albums, including Endless Flight, Learning to Love, Marathon, Skydance, and It Takes Two. His 1984 album Marathon, produced by legendary bassist Stanley Clarke, became especially popular in the United Kingdom and remains one of his most celebrated works.
In 1988, Franklin joined BMG and released Diamond Inside of You, which featured powerhouse vocalist Jennifer Holliday on the single “Gotta Give It Up.” He later explored ambient and nature-inspired music through collaborations with Bernie Krause during the 1990s.
