Hayden Panettiere, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’ Star, Dies at 36

Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in HeroesNashville and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36.

Panettiere’s death was reported by TMZ on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Her representative later confirmed the news to ABC News. Her father, Skip Panettiere, shared a statement remembering his daughter as “an incredible light” and “a force of nature” who brought love and joy to those around her and to the millions of people who watched her on screen. The family has asked for privacy as they process the loss.

At this time, a cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. TMZ reported that law enforcement responded to an incident involving Panettiere on Sunday and that an investigation is currently open. A source close to the actress also told TMZ that she had been experiencing back pain during the past year.

Panettiere began working in entertainment as a child and built a career spanning television, film, voice acting and music. She became a household name after being cast as Claire Bennet, the cheerleader with regenerative powers, on NBC’s hit superhero drama Heroes. The series ran from 2006 to 2010 and made Panettiere one of television’s most recognizable young stars.

She later took on another signature role as Juliette Barnes on the musical drama Nashville, starring alongside Connie Britton. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Panettiere also appeared in films including Remember the TitansRaising HelenIce PrincessBring It On: All or NothingScream 4 and Scream VI. She returned to the Scream franchise in 2023, reprising her role as Kirby Reed in Scream VI.

Beyond her acting career, Panettiere was candid about the challenges she faced away from the spotlight. In recent years, she spoke publicly about addiction, postpartum depression, relationships and the pressures of growing up in Hollywood. She chronicled many of those experiences in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

Her final months included a renewed return to the public eye as she promoted her memoir. Her final Instagram post, shared July 27, featured Panettiere smiling alongside photographer Randall Slavin with the caption “Good times and good friends.”

Panettiere’s death comes just days before what would have been her 37th birthday on August 21.

She leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

As news of her death spreads, fans and colleagues are remembering an actress who began her career as a child and grew into a performer known around the world for characters that became defining parts of television and film.
