Music history has been made as Beyoncé and the late Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez come together on a new posthumous duet, “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor).”
The emotional collaboration was released September 4 as part of the 20th-anniversary edition of Beyoncé’s B’Day album. The expanded project celebrates two decades since the original album was released in 2006.
The track combines Beyoncé’s Spanish-language recording of “Irreplaceable,” originally released as part of her 2007 Spanish-language project Irreemplazable, with Selena’s vocals from her beloved 1992 Tejano classic “Como La Flor.”
A meeting of two Texas icons
The collaboration carries special significance because both singers have deep Texas roots and became groundbreaking figures in music. Selena, who died in 1995 at age 23, became one of the most influential artists in Tejano music, while Beyoncé has gone on to become one of the biggest global stars in contemporary music.
Beyoncé has previously spoken about Selena’s influence on her. The Houston native has recalled encountering Selena as a child and has credited the singer as an inspiration, particularly while working on her Spanish-language recordings.
The collaboration was made possible with approval from Selena’s estate, making the release particularly notable given how rarely Selena’s recordings are authorized for new projects.
Part of Beyoncé’s B’Day celebration
The Selena duet is one of several additions to the expanded 31-track B’Day (20th Anniversary Edition). The anniversary release includes remastered material, previously unreleased recordings, Spanish-language songs and collaborations with artists including Maluma and Pharrell Williams.
For fans, “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” represents a remarkable musical connection between two women whose careers helped break cultural and musical barriers.
More than 30 years after Selena recorded “Como La Flor,” her voice is once again reaching a new generation—this time alongside one of the world’s most celebrated performers.
