An Amazon-area worker was shot and killed outside a suburban Chicago facility after an altercation with a food delivery driver, according to police and local officials.
The incident happened Sunday night at the Amazon fulfillment center located at 7001 Vollmer Road in Matteson. Police responded shortly before 11 p.m. after reports of shots fired in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities identified the victim as 26-year-old Dylan Perkins of Glenwood. Officials said he worked at the site through a third-party vendor rather than as a direct Amazon employee.
Altercation preceded shooting
According to investigators, the confrontation began as an argument between Perkins, a colleague, and a food delivery driver in the facility’s parking lot. Witnesses and surveillance footage indicate the dispute escalated into a physical fight before the driver opened fire, striking the victim multiple times.
Police said the suspect, believed to be a contracted delivery driver, fled the scene after the shooting. A description has not been released, and no arrests had been announced as of the latest updates.
Investigation ongoing
Matteson police, along with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, are actively investigating the homicide. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public and indicated they are close to identifying or apprehending a suspect.
Amazon released a statement expressing condolences and said it is cooperating with investigators.
The facility was temporarily placed on lockdown following the shooting, while law enforcement secured the area and reviewed surveillance footage.
This marks another violent incident tied to the industrial site, which has seen previous safety concerns raised by workers and local officials.
The investigation remains ongoing.
