Colin Kaepernick Funds Independent Autopsy for Nolan Wells as Parents Reveal They Tracked Son’s Phone Before His Death

Former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick is helping the family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells in their search for answers by paying for an independent autopsy, as new details continue to emerge in the mysterious case that has drawn national attention.

During a Friday press conference, civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced that Kaepernick is covering the cost of an independent autopsy to be conducted in Washington, D.C. The additional examination comes as Wells’ family questions the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death and seeks greater transparency from investigators.

Authorities say Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip near Horn Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was recovered days later, and while investigators have said there is currently no evidence of foul play, the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation pending autopsy and toxicology results.

The family’s concerns intensified after Nolan’s parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, shared emotional new details during an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Christine Wonsley said she used the Life360 app to track her son’s phone after learning he was missing. When the family eventually recovered the device, she said they discovered something they found deeply troubling.

According to Wonsley, Nolan maintained two Snapchat accounts, but both appeared completely empty despite less than 24 hours having passed since his disappearance. She said the lack of photos and videos was highly unusual because her son frequently documented gatherings with friends, leading the family to question whether content had been deleted.

The parents have repeatedly said they “just want honesty and transparency” as they continue searching for answers about what happened during the boating trip. They have also questioned reports that Nolan voluntarily stayed behind on the island, saying that decision was inconsistent with the safety-conscious young man they knew.

Attorney Ben Crump has also pointed to a video that allegedly shows Nolan involved in an argument shortly before he disappeared, during which he can reportedly be heard demanding that someone return his phone. The footage is now part of the ongoing investigation.

Kaepernick’s decision to fund the independent autopsy adds another high-profile voice supporting the Wells family’s pursuit of answers. Actor Tyler Perry has also stepped in to help, offering to pay for Nolan’s funeral expenses, while attorney Ben Crump and Al Sharpton continue advocating for what they describe as a full, transparent investigation.

As investigators continue reviewing evidence and awaiting autopsy findings, Nolan Wells’ family says they remain committed to uncovering the truth behind the tragic death of the teenager.
