Emergency personnel who were already stationed at the game responded and provided medical care before Barnett was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
The game was suspended following the incident and ultimately canceled.
William Jewell College confirmed Barnett’s death and expressed condolences to his family, teammates, coaches, classmates and the broader Liberty community.
“Forever a Cardinal,” the college said in a tribute announcing his passing. A vigil was also planned on campus, while counseling services were made available to students and staff coping with the sudden loss.

Before playing at William Jewell, he was a member of the 2023 Liberty North football team and helped build lasting relationships with teammates and coaches. He continued his football career at William Jewell, where he became an important member of the Cardinals.
He was also recognized academically, earning 2025-26 Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
