The city of Louisville has reached a settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor, the EMT shot to death in her own home.

City officials announced that they agreed to pay the family $12 million for the wrongful death of their loved one. The settlement also comes with a police reform package.

The family’s attorney Ben Crump also shared the news.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fisher began the news conference by saying Taylor’s death 186 days ago “ignited a movement in Louisville and the nation for racial justice.” Speaking directly to Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, Fisher said, “I cannot begin to imagine Ms. Palmer’s pain and I’m deeply, deeply sorry for Breonna’s death.”

Fischer said that in addition to the monetary settlement, the largest in a police use-of-force case in Louisville history, the city will implement a series of police department reforms “to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again.”

He also vowed to build a stronger connections between police officers and the communities — and added there will be more transparency and accountability for police officers.

Although this is considered a step in the right direction, justice is still needed for this young woman who’s life was cut short.
