Shonda Rhimes Renews Overall Deal With Netflix for Another Five Years

Shonda Rhimes is staying at Netflix.

The award-winning writer, producer and creator behind some of television’s biggest hits has renewed her overall deal with Netflix for another five years, extending a partnership that first began in 2017. Rhimes’ production company, Shondaland, and her longtime producing partner Betsy Beers will continue working exclusively with the streaming giant.

Under the new agreement, Rhimes and Shondaland will continue developing and producing television series, feature films and gaming projects for Netflix. The partnership also covers merchandise and live events connected to Shondaland properties.

The renewed deal comes as Rhimes’ relationship with Netflix continues to produce major successes, most notably “Bridgerton.” The period drama has become one of the streamer’s most successful franchises since its debut in 2020, with multiple seasons ranking among Netflix’s most-watched series. Season 4 recently surpassed 100 million views, while the series has already been renewed for a fifth and sixth season.

“Bridgerton” isn’t the only Shondaland project to make an impact at Netflix. The company has also produced the hit limited series “Inventing Anna,” the mystery series “The Residence,” and the Emmy-winning documentary “Black Barbie.”

Rhimes expressed her excitement about continuing the partnership, praising Netflix for giving Shondaland the creative freedom and support to tell stories that entertain audiences while reflecting diversity and humanity around the world.

“I am excited to extend our relationship with Netflix,” Rhimes said. “For almost a decade, Netflix has provided Shondaland with the autonomy and support to tell our kind of stories—stories that both entertain and reflect diversity and humanity in a way that resonates with audiences around the world.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria also celebrated the renewed partnership, calling Rhimes an “incomparable” creative force and highlighting the cultural impact of her work.

The agreement will also continue Netflix’s support of Shondaland’s inclusion initiatives, including the Ladder Program, which helps train and create opportunities for underrepresented behind-the-scenes talent.

With “Bridgerton” continuing to expand and additional television, film, gaming and live-event projects on the horizon, the new five-year agreement ensures that Shondaland will remain a major creative force at Netflix for years to come.

For Rhimes, the renewal marks another chapter in one of Hollywood’s most successful creator-streamer partnerships—and signals that there is still plenty more Shondaland drama, romance and storytelling ahead.
