Rapper, singer and actor Kid Cudi is taking on a major new creative challenge, announcing that he will write, direct and star in JEAN, an upcoming biographical film about legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The project is scheduled to begin filming in 2027.
The entertainer, whose real name is Scott Mescudi, shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday, October 21, revealing that he decided to take matters into his own hands after years of people asking him to portray the influential artist in a film.
“For years people have asked me about playing Jean Michel Basquiat in a film. But no project actually came to be,” Cudi wrote in his announcement. He explained that he ultimately decided to write the screenplay himself.
Cudi also gave fans an early look at his transformation into Basquiat, sharing photos from a preliminary wardrobe test featuring a wig inspired by the artist’s signature hairstyle. He clarified that the look was still a work in progress as the production team continues developing the character’s appearance.
The project carries personal significance for Cudi, who described Basquiat as a longtime inspiration throughout his career. According to the rapper, preparing to tell the artist’s story involved extensive research, reading books and speaking with people who knew Basquiat personally.
“This film will be a love letter to Jean, the ’80s and NY city,” Cudi shared, expressing his excitement about presenting the artist’s story through his own creative vision.
Who Was Jean-Michel Basquiat?
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960, Basquiat became one of the most influential artists to emerge from the city’s downtown art scene during the 1980s. He first attracted attention through graffiti created under the name SAMO before gaining international recognition for his distinctive paintings combining text, symbolism and expressive imagery.
His work frequently explored themes of race, identity, power and social inequality. Basquiat also developed a notable artistic relationship with pop art icon Andy Warhol, further cementing his place in contemporary art history.
Despite achieving remarkable success at a young age, Basquiat died in August 1988 at just 27 years old from an accidental drug overdose. His artwork and cultural influence have continued to resonate with generations of artists, musicians and fans.
Kid Cudi Expands His Filmmaking Career
Cudi has steadily expanded his career beyond music, building a résumé that includes film and television appearances. He also created and starred in the Netflix animated musical Entergalactic, which accompanied his 2022 album of the same name.
With JEAN, Cudi will take on the combined responsibilities of screenwriter, director and lead actor, giving him an opportunity to shape the film’s portrayal of an artist who has profoundly influenced him.
The upcoming biopic also adds to the continued interest in Basquiat’s life and legacy, which have been explored through documentaries, books and previous screen adaptations.
As production moves toward its planned 2027 start, additional details about the cast, production team and release date have yet to be announced.
For Cudi, JEAN represents more than another acting role. It is an opportunity to pay tribute to an artist whose creative fearlessness helped redefine the art world and inspired Cudi’s own artistic journey.
