Trenton Grant, 15-Year-Old Monroe High School Student, Killed in Fire and Stabbing Incident; Sheriff Says Suspect Identified

Trenton Grant, a 15-year-old Monroe High School sophomore, was killed early Saturday morning, October 17, in an incident involving a fire and multiple stabbings. Several others were injured, and authorities said they had identified the person believed to be responsible.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 5:30 a.m. to reports of an active assault and structure fire in the 1200 block of Raintree Boulevard. First responders found several people with stab wounds and lacerations. Grant was pronounced dead at the scene, and two adults were taken to a hospital with stab wounds.

In an update released Monday, October 19, investigators said they knew the suspect’s identity and whereabouts, but the person was not in custody. Officials called the incident isolated and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Neighbor Describes Chaotic Scene

Neighbor Raven Lawson told Detroit-area station WXYZ that she called 911 after seeing the home on fire. She said several people fled the residence, shouting that someone had a knife and was trying to kill them.

Lawson said a man believed to be the suspect then emerged from the burning home with a knife and approached her vehicle while she and her fiancé were inside. She said he struck the car window and tried to get her to let him in.

The couple eventually drove away, Lawson said, and the man released his grip on the vehicle, dropping the knife near the end of the driveway.

Authorities have not detailed what led to the violence or provided a complete account of what happened inside the residence. The investigation remains ongoing.

Family Remembers Trenton Grant

Grant’s death has devastated his family and the Monroe community. His sister, LeAndra Baker, said the family was mourning the loss of a beloved younger brother while two family members remained in critical condition.

In a statement reported by 13ABC, Baker described Trenton as deeply loved and thanked first responders, hospital staff and victim advocates for their support. The family requested privacy and positive thoughts as their injured loved ones continued to fight for their lives.

Grant was remembered as a talented student who participated in orchestra, played piano, competed in track and field, and played freshman football. He attended Monroe Public Schools throughout his academic career and was selected to perform with the Honors Orchestra at Eastern Michigan University.

Community Plans Candlelight Vigil

A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, at Monroe High School to honor Grant and fellow student Garrett Siffer, who recently died in a car crash. The vigil was scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.

Grant’s family is seeking donations for funeral expenses. Contributions can be made through the House of Day Funeral Home in Toledo, and a family fundraiser has been established online.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department’s Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.
