Algee Smith is stepping into the world of West Coast hip-hop history.
The actor has been cast as legendary rapper and producer Warren G in Snoop, Universal Pictures’ upcoming biopic about the life and career of rap icon Snoop Dogg. The casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Smith is no stranger to portraying real-life music figures. He gained widespread attention for his performance as Ralph Tresvant in BET’s acclaimed miniseries The New Edition Story, a role that showcased his acting, singing and dancing abilities. He also starred as Larry Reed in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit and is widely recognized for playing Chris McKay on HBO’s Euphoria.
As Warren G, Smith will portray one of the important figures connected to Snoop Dogg’s early rise in hip-hop. Warren G, born Warren Griffin III, was part of the influential West Coast rap trio 213 alongside Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg. His connection to Snoop would eventually help lead the young rapper to Dr. Dre, a relationship that played a pivotal role in Snoop’s breakthrough.
The casting adds another major piece to a growing ensemble that already includes Jonathan Daviss as Snoop Dogg and Myles Bullock Be as Dr. Dre. Camron Jones has also been cast as Tupac Shakur, while Lauren London will portray Snoop’s mother, Beverly Tate.
The film is being directed by Craig Brewer, whose credits include Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name. Snoop Dogg himself is among the producers, alongside Brian Grazer, helping bring his story to the big screen.
Production is expected to begin in and around Los Angeles in September.
Universal currently has Snoop scheduled for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027.
With Smith taking on Warren G and a cast that includes portrayals of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur, the highly anticipated project is shaping up to revisit one of the most influential eras in West Coast hip-hop history.
