Will Smith Invests in Hometown WNBA Team Set for 2030 Debut

Oscar-winning actor Will Smith is bringing his influence back to his roots, reportedly joining the ownership group of a new WNBA expansion team in Philadelphia, set to debut in 2030.

According to multiple reports, Smith has secured a minority stake—estimated at around 0.1%—in the yet-to-be-named franchise. While the stake is relatively small, his involvement adds star power and a strong hometown connection to the ownership group.

The Philadelphia team is part of the WNBA’s broader expansion plan, which will grow the league to 18 teams by the end of the decade. The rollout includes new franchises in Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029), and Philadelphia (2030), reflecting the league’s rapid rise in popularity and demand.

The Philadelphia franchise will be operated by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, led by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, with additional backing from institutional investors and Comcast. Ownership has already committed significant resources, including at least $50 million toward a dedicated practice facility, signaling long-term investment in the team’s success.

The team is expected to begin play at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with plans to eventually move into a new downtown arena once construction is completed.

Smith’s investment comes at a time when women’s basketball is experiencing unprecedented growth. Record-breaking attendance, increased media visibility, and rising sponsorship deals have helped elevate the WNBA’s national profile. Philadelphia itself has already demonstrated strong fan interest, recently hosting a women’s basketball event that drew over 21,000 fans—one of the largest crowds in the sport’s history.

With a mix of celebrity backing, strong ownership, and surging fan support, the addition of Philadelphia marks a major step in the WNBA’s continued expansion—and a meaningful homecoming investment for one of the city’s most famous natives.
