Marvel Studios has officially unveiled the next Black Panther, ending months of speculation during its highly anticipated Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.
Actor David Jonsson, best known for his standout performances in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, has been cast as the new Black Panther in Black Panther 3. Rather than replacing the late Chadwick Boseman’s beloved T’Challa, Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s son, continuing the Wakandan legacy through the next generation.
Director Ryan Coogler confirmed the announcement alongside returning stars Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Winston Duke (M’Baku), revealing that the third installment is scheduled to hit theaters on December 15, 2028.
The storyline builds on the ending of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where Nakia revealed she and T’Challa had a son named Toussaint, whose Wakandan name is also T’Challa. The upcoming film will follow that character as he comes of age and embraces the mantle of Black Panther.
Taking the stage at Comic-Con, Jonsson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying he is honored to join the Marvel family and carry forward one of the franchise’s most meaningful legacies. Marvel’s decision allows the studio to honor Chadwick Boseman’s impact while continuing the story through his character’s bloodline rather than recasting the original T’Challa.
Marvel also confirmed that Oscar-winning director Ryan Coogler will return to helm the third film. Additionally, legendary actor Denzel Washington is set to join the cast in a role that Coogler previously revealed was written specifically for him, though details about his character remain under wraps.
The announcement was one of several major reveals during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation, signaling a new era for Wakanda and setting the stage for the next chapter of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most celebrated franchises.
