Catherine O’Hara, “Home Alone” and “Beetlejuice” Actress Passes Away at 71

Catherine O’Hara, the celebrated Canadian-born actor, comedian and writer whose career spanned television, film and stage for more than five decades, has died at the age of 71. Her passing was confirmed Friday; she died at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness, her agency said. No further details about the cause of death have been released.

A Storied Career in Comedy and Drama
O’Hara’s career began in the 1970s with the groundbreaking sketch comedy series Second City Television (SCTV), where she helped shape some of the show’s most memorable characters and earned her first Emmy Award for writing. From there, she transitioned to film and television roles that showcased both her comedic genius and dramatic range.

Film audiences around the world came to know her as the harried but loving mother Kate McCallister in the holiday classics Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), roles that endeared her to generations of moviegoers. Beyond that, she appeared in hits such as Beetlejuice and a series of beloved Christopher Guest mockumentaries including Best in Show.

In later years, O’Hara experienced a major career resurgence with her role as Moira Rose on the acclaimed comedy Schitt’s Creek, earning multiple Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her work. She also lent her voice to animated films and delivered powerful performances in television dramas, including The Last of Us.

Family and Personal Life
Off-screen, O’Hara was devoted to her family. She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, whom she met while working on Beetlejuice, and their two sons, Luke and Matthew. Throughout her life, she often spoke of motherhood as one of her most cherished roles.
