Young Mom Dies After Jumping Into Detroit River To Save Cousin Who Fell In

A woman died early Friday morning after jumping into the Detroit River canal to save her cousin who fell in.

According to FOX 2 Detroit, Diamond Shelton was out with two cousins in the Jefferson-Chalmers area when one woman slipped near Ford Park. The 22-year old jumped in to save her but started to struggle.

Family members said the young mom didn’t know how to swim but that didn’t stop her from trying to save her family member.

The third woman called 911 but then jumped in herself to help.

When Detroit Police and fire got there around 4 a.m., firefighters had to pull all three women from the water.

The other two women survived but Diamond later died.

Diamond leaves behind a 1-year old daughter.

Detroit Police Commander Keeth Williams said no foul play is suspected but urges people to be extremely cautious around canals and the Detroit River.
