One of the finest actors to emerge from the 1970s is finally getting his flowers.
Veteran actor Ernest Harden Jr. has earned his first-ever Primetime Emmy Award nomination, receiving recognition in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category for his unforgettable performance as Louie Cloverfield on HBO Max’s acclaimed medical drama, The Pitt.
Harden’s portrayal of Louie—a beloved Emergency Department “frequent flier” battling chronic alcoholism—quickly became one of the show’s most memorable performances. More than comic relief, Louie served as a compassionate and familiar presence, helping introduce new doctors and viewers to the fast-paced world of the emergency room while delivering heartfelt moments that resonated with audiences throughout the season.

His remarkable performance earned him recognition from the Television Academy, placing him among an impressive field of nominees that includes fellow The Pitt actor Jeff Kober and Colman Domingo for his guest role on Euphoria.
Born on November 25, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, Harden has built a remarkable career spanning more than five decades. His extensive résumé includes memorable performances in some of television and film’s most beloved productions, including:
- Good Times (1978), where he portrayed troubled art student Earl Mitchell.
- The Jeffersons, playing Marcus Henderson, a trusted employee at George Jefferson’s dry-cleaning business.
- White Men Can’t Jump (1992).
- Sweetwater (2023), as Coach Will Robinson.
- The Pitt (2025), as the unforgettable Louie Cloverfield.
This year’s Emmy nominations also celebrated an outstanding group of performers, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Wonder Man), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, and Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Zendaya (Euphoria), Joy Sunday (DTF St. Louis), narrator Octavia Spencer (Lost Women of Alaska), and Michael J. Fox (Shrinking). The Television Academy also honored Rob Reiner with a posthumous nomination for his guest appearance on The Bear.
Behind the camera, Salli Richardson-Whitfield continued making history. After becoming the first Black woman nominated for directing in a drama series in 2024, she earned two additional directing nominations this year for her outstanding work on The Gilded Age and Task.
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on September 14, 2026, on NBC and Peacock.
Congratulations to Ernest Harden Jr. and all of this year’s nominees. After more than 50 years of memorable performances, this long-overdue recognition is a fitting tribute to one of television’s most respected and enduring talents.
Louie forever.
