Tyler Perry Admits He Hated Playing Madea, And Addresses Why He Doesn’t Have A Writer’s Room

Tyler Perry is one busy man and he doesn’t mind it one bit but one thing he does mind is playing Madea.

While the movie and TV mogul hit the road with the cast of his new Netflix film A Fall From Grace, Tyler revealed that he hated playing Madea and addressed why he doesn’t have other writers on his work.

Tyler Hated Playing Madea:

Despite the fact that the character, onstage and in movies, raked in about $2 billion and pretty much funded the majestic and behemoth Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta he was not a fan of  transforming himself into the famous gun-toting, foulmouthed grandmother.
Tyler said that he was inspired to dress up as a woman after seeing the phenomenal success that comedy and acting legend Eddie Murphy experienced playing a mom and grandmother, most particularly in the Nutty Professor and its blockbuster sequal Nutty Professor II: The Klumps.

When the interviewer asked if Tyler missed Madea, his response was simple and quick: “Nope. I don’t.”

“Not even a little?” the interviewer wanted to know.

“No. We have a few more weeks of the Farewell Tour, and then I’m done.”

When Level writer said she thought Tyler enjoyed playing Madea, Tyler responded: “It was never something I enjoyed doing.”

When the writer said that he didn’t believe  Tyler, he insisted, “My hand to God. I hated the costume, the wig, all of it.”

“I was scared to death” to play a woman,” Tyler said. “I watched Eddie Murphy and how he did his female characters. I said I’ll try it once and that’s it. And it ended up being a $2 billion franchise.”

Tyler Perry Doesn’t Have A Writer’s Room

Last week, Tyler posted a video showing the many shows that he was working on for 2020. The video was intended to be motivational but Tyler ended up getting backlash for not opening doors for other writers.

He then posted a photo of him showing his writer’s room — which basically is a massive room with only him in it.

The posts received mixed reactions. Some applauded Tyler for his ambition and dedication to his work, while others criticized him for denying opportunities to up-and-coming writers—specifically black writers based in Atlanta, where his studio is located.

While promoting A Fall From Grace, Tyler addressed multiple times on why he doesn’t have a writers room. Here he is on Bevy Smith‘s SiriusXM radio show.

Well, there you have it! Tyler loves writing and he wants to keep his ratings up, which is totally understanding but at some point he will have to pass the torch so that his empire will not fall after he’s gone. God forbid that will be no time soon because we are enjoying his work. It’s also great to know that he’s created some programs for upcoming writers.

So what do y’all think about these situations? Can you believe Tyler hated playing Madea and do you agree with Tyler writing his own work? Leave  us a comment below.
