The Mississippi Board of Nursing has officially closed an anonymous complaint filed against Christine Wonsley, the mother of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, bringing a swift end to an investigation that her attorney says was meant to intimidate a grieving mother.
Wonsley, a family nurse practitioner, has been outspoken in demanding answers surrounding the mysterious death of her son, whose body was discovered on July 6 on Horn Island, Mississippi, after a Fourth of July outing with friends. Since then, she and her family have repeatedly questioned the official timeline and called for a more thorough investigation into the circumstances of Nolan’s death.
According to civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the anonymous complaint against Wonsley was an attempt to pressure her into remaining silent as she continues to seek justice for her son.
“This is a warning shot at a grieving mother, meant to pressure and scare her into staying quiet,” Crump said in a statement, adding that Wonsley has maintained an exemplary professional record throughout her nursing career.
Hours after news of the complaint became public, Wonsley announced that the Mississippi Board of Nursing had closed the matter.
In a message shared publicly, she thanked supporters for their prayers and acknowledged the emotional toll the complaint had taken.
“This definitely has added more hurt to an already devastating time because I love my job and I love my patients,” Wonsley wrote after learning the case had been dismissed.
The Mississippi Board of Nursing stated it cannot confirm or deny individual investigations because they are confidential but noted that state law requires the agency to review every complaint it receives.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Nolan Wells’ death remains ongoing. Both law enforcement and an independent legal team representing the family continue to seek information from potential witnesses.
An independent autopsy commissioned by the Wells family listed Nolan’s cause and manner of death as undetermined pending further investigation. The report found no significant traumatic injuries but noted an area of discoloration on the back of his skull that forensic experts said warrants additional examination.
Despite the challenges, Wonsley has vowed to continue pursuing answers about what happened to her son, saying she will not be discouraged from seeking the truth.
