After years of speculation, it’s official—Jim Carrey is heading to the future.
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that the comedy icon will star in the long-awaited live-action adaptation of The Jetsons, bringing one of television’s most beloved animated families to the big screen. The announcement was included in the company’s latest shareholder update, confirming that the project is officially moving forward and is expected to arrive sometime after 2027.
The film will be directed by Jurassic World filmmaker Colin Trevorrow, who is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Joe Epstein. Rumors that Carrey would lead the project first surfaced in late 2025, but Warner Bros. Discovery has now made the casting official.
Although Warner Bros. has not revealed which character Carrey will portray, previous reports indicated he was expected to play George Jetson, the lovable patriarch of the futuristic family.
Originally created by Hanna-Barbera, The Jetsons debuted in 1962 and became a pop culture classic with its imaginative vision of life in the future. The series followed George Jetson, his wife Jane, their children Judy and Elroy, their robot maid Rosie, and the family dog Astro as they navigated a high-tech world filled with flying cars, robot assistants, and futuristic gadgets. The franchise later expanded with revivals and a 1990 animated feature film.
The project marks another major family-friendly role for Carrey, who recently earned praise for his return as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series. He has also reportedly been in discussions to reprise his iconic role as the Grinch in a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
With Carrey’s signature comedic energy and Trevorrow’s blockbuster experience, anticipation is already building for what could become one of Warner Bros.’ biggest nostalgic adaptations. While fans will have to wait a little longer before boarding the Jetsons’ flying car, the future is officially taking shape.
