Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler to Star in ‘Miami Vice ’85’ Reboot

A new chapter of a classic crime saga is officially on the way. Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are set to lead Miami Vice ’85, a high-profile reboot directed by Joseph Kosinski.

The Universal Pictures production is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027, with filming expected to begin later this year. The project will be shot for IMAX and promises a visually immersive take on the iconic franchise.

Jordan will portray Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler steps into the role of James “Sonny” Crockett—two undercover detectives navigating the glamorous yet dangerous world of 1980s Miami. The film will draw inspiration from the original TV series’ pilot and early seasons, focusing on the era’s signature blend of style, crime, and cultural influence.

The original Miami Vice, created by Anthony Yerkovich, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas and became a defining show of the 1980s, known for its fashion, music, and cinematic storytelling. A previous film adaptation, directed by Michael Mann, was released in 2006 and starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

Jordan enters the project following a major career milestone, having won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his dual performance in Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler. Butler, meanwhile, continues his rise after earning critical acclaim and award nominations for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis.

With a blend of star power, a visionary director, and a beloved source material, Miami Vice ’85 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2027.
