Mary Wilson, Legend And Founding Member Of The Supremes, Dead At 76

Mary Wilson, legendary singer and founding member of the Supremes has passed away at the age of 76.

According to a statement by her publicist, Mary died suddenly at her home in Henderson, Nevada, on Monday. A cause of death wasn’t revealed.

Back in Detroit in 1959, Mary helped form the female singing group The Primettes, alongside Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown. Betty left the group and was replaced.

Eventually Mary, Florence, and Diana formed the Supremes and went on to acclaimed success.

Under the Motown Records label, the group scored 12 no. 1 hits with songs like “Baby Love” and “Stop! In the Name of Love.” The Supremes and their songs remain influential decades later.

Mary stayed on with The Supremes even after other original members left and new ones joined the line-up. The group split in 1977 and she pursued a solo career.

Motown paid tribute to the legend on social media.

Motown founder Berry Gordy also issued a statement.

“The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown.’

“I was always proud of Mary. She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of the Supremes … She was a trailblazer, a diva and will be deeply missed.”

Group member Diana Ross also shared words on Mary’s passing.

The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. The 2006 film Dreamgirls, starring Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, was loosely based on their story.

Last year, Mary appeared as a contestant on the ABC hit show Dancing With The Stars, and she was glowing!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a funeral service for Mary will be private, the statement said. A celebration of her life is expected later in the year.

Sending condolences to her family. Rest in peace Queen.
