EGOT winner John Legend is set to portray the late entertainment icon and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte in the upcoming film The Road Home, a powerful new drama directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon. The film is currently in production in South Africa and tells the story behind Paul Simon’s groundbreaking 1986 album Graceland while highlighting the contributions of South African musicians during the apartheid era.
Rather than focusing solely on Simon, The Road Home centers on legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, widely regarded as the father of South African jazz. The story explores Masekela’s life in exile and the cultural and political tensions surrounding the creation of Graceland, an album that sparked debate because it was recorded during the United Nations’ cultural boycott of apartheid South Africa.
Legend joins an acclaimed cast that includes Johnny Flynn as Paul Simon, Cynthia Erivo as South African music legend Miriam Makeba, Thabo Rametsi as Hugh Masekela, and Guy Pearce as anti-apartheid advocate Archbishop Trevor Huddleston.
The role carries personal significance for Legend, who shared that Belafonte was more than an icon to him.
“I was honored to know Mr. Belafonte as my friend, mentor and collaborator in the struggle for justice. He was an incredible human being who lived a monumental, revolutionary life,” Legend said in a statement. “He was the epitome of an artist and activist who set a standard for me and so many others who stand on his shoulders. I count it a privilege to be entrusted with the role of Harry Belafonte in this special film.”
Belafonte, who died in 2023 at the age of 96, was a trailblazing singer, actor, and humanitarian whose influence extended far beyond entertainment. He was a leading voice in the American civil rights movement, a close ally of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a passionate supporter of the global fight against apartheid. His efforts also helped elevate artists like Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba to international audiences.
Producers describe The Road Home as a story of resilience, sacrifice, and the power of music to challenge injustice. The film is also expected to feature newly recorded versions of songs by Paul Simon, Hugh Masekela, and Miriam Makeba, celebrating the enduring legacy of the artists who helped shape one of music’s most influential eras.
