Actress Hayden Panettiere’s death is now being investigated as a possible fatal overdose involving an oxycodone pill believed to have been laced with fentanyl, according to multiple law-enforcement sources cited by TMZ.
Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36 after she was found unresponsive at a temporary residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Emergency responders found her in cardiac arrest and attempted lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to TMZ, investigators believe Panettiere took an oxycodone pill the morning of her death that may have contained fentanyl. Sources told the outlet that she had obtained several prescription medications through a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles and had taken some of the drugs while traveling from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before her death.
Authorities are reportedly examining the source of the suspected fatal pill. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Los Angeles is said to be working to determine the relationship between Panettiere and the alleged drug supplier and to trace where the pill came from.
However, Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death have not yet been formally confirmed. Toxicology results are still pending, and law-enforcement sources have cautioned that the suspected fentanyl-laced oxycodone theory depends on those results.
A preliminary autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere’s death. Officials previously said additional studies were needed before determining the official cause and manner of death.
The investigation comes after Panettiere had publicly discussed struggles with substance use throughout her life. Her death has also renewed attention to the dangers of illicit or counterfeit prescription pills, which can contain fentanyl without the person taking the medication knowing it is present.
Panettiere leaves behind her daughter, Kaya. She was remembered following her death as a talented actress who began working as a child and went on to become one of television’s familiar faces through roles including Claire Bennet on Heroes and Juliette Barnes on Nashville.
For now, investigators are awaiting toxicology findings that could provide the definitive answer about what caused the actress’s death.
