Oscar-nominated actress Danielle Brooks is officially bringing soul food, culture, and community to television in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy American Comfort.
According to Deadline, Brooks is set to star in and executive produce the new series inspired by the life of legendary Harlem restaurateur Melba Wilson. The project is written and executive produced by acclaimed creator Kenya Barris.
The series will explore the heart, humor, and hospitality that helped transform Wilson’s iconic restaurant, Melba’s, from a neighborhood eatery into one of Harlem’s most beloved soul food destinations for more than 20 years. Brooks will portray Melba, the owner of the fictional restaurant at the center of the story.
Wilson, a James Beard Award-nominated chef, cookbook author, entrepreneur, and Food Network personality, has built her reputation around more than just food. Her brand has become synonymous with warmth, community, and cultural connection throughout Harlem and beyond.
The casting marks another major collaboration between Brooks and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who is executive producing through Harpo Entertainment after previously working alongside Brooks on The Color Purple.
Barris executive produces through Khalabo Ink Society alongside Winfrey, Carla Gardini, Aaron Kaplan for Kapital Entertainment, Wilson herself, director Neema Barnette, and Aisha Summers-Burke for BET Studios, a division of CBS Studios.
Brooks continues to shine as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated talents after first gaining national attention as Taystee in Orange Is the New Black. She later earned critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for her role as Sofia in The Color Purple. Her recent projects also include Peacemaker, The Piano Lesson, and Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.
American Comfort reportedly landed at Apple TV+ following a competitive bidding situation and is already generating excitement as a heartfelt comedy centered around family, food, and community.
