Thing are moving along with the upcoming film The Color Purple.  

The musical production will feature actors Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R, David Alan Grier, Tamela Mann, Ciara, and Louis Gossett Jr.

A new addition has been added to the cast roster. Warner Bros. Pictures announced Wednesday that Aunjanue Ellis will be appearing on the big screen.

According to Essence, the Academy nominee star will play the role of Mama, Celie and Nettie’s mother. A press release states that Ellis’ character is the “embodiment of The Great Ancestor and the source of both Celie and Nettie’s awe-inspiring strength.”

Ellis is best known for her roles in films such as Men Of Honor, Ray, 61st Street, Undercover Brother, Lovecraft County, Quantico, The Book Of Negroes, The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, The Mentalist, and The Help. She also earned a nomination for best-supporting actress in King Richard.

The Color Purple is set to hit theaters in December 2023.
