Oscar-Nominated Actor Graham Greene Dies at 73

It is with great sadness that the entertainment world bids farewell to Canadian Oscar-nominated actor Graham Greene, who has died at the age of 73. His representatives confirmed that the beloved actor passed away in a Toronto hospital on Sunday afternoon.

According to his manager, Gerry Jordan, Greene died of natural causes following a long illness. His agent, Michael Greene (no relation), shared a heartfelt statement:

“He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” referencing the actor’s longtime agent who passed in 2013.

Greene was best known for his Academy Award-nominated role in Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic Dances With Wolves, where he portrayed Kicking Bird, earning him widespread acclaim. Costner paid tribute on Instagram, recalling Greene’s dedication to learning the Lakota language and the quiet power he brought to his role:

“He was a master at work and a wonderful human being,” Costner wrote.

Beyond Dances With Wolves, Greene’s filmography includes memorable performances in Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), The Green Mile (1999), Transamerica (2005), and Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River (2017). Sheridan also cast him in two Paramount+ series: 1883 and, most recently, Tulsa King.

Greene’s versatility made him a fixture in both film and television for decades. His work resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike, blending strength, wisdom, and humanity into every character he portrayed.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore, their daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and grandson Tarlo.

Thank you, Graham Greene, for a lifetime of extraordinary performances and contributions to cinema. You will be deeply missed.
