The investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells remains one of the nation’s most closely watched cases after an independent autopsy commissioned by his family concluded that both his cause and manner of death are “undetermined” pending further investigation. The findings were announced Wednesday during a news conference at the NAACP National Convention in Chicago by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Wells family.
Independent Autopsy Findings
The independent examination, conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell, found no fractures or deep tissue injuries on Wells’ body. However, the report identified a red discoloration on the back of his skull, describing it as inconclusive and requiring additional investigation before any conclusions can be reached.
Dr. Mitchell also stated that he could not rule out the possibility that non-accidental factors contributed to Wells’ death. At the same time, he explained that several limitations prevented a definitive conclusion.
Among the biggest challenges was that Wells’ body had already undergone a state autopsy before the independent examination. As a result, key organs and neck structures had been removed, making it impossible to determine whether Wells suffered a neck injury or whether water was present in his lungs—critical evidence in determining if drowning was the cause of death. The body’s state of decomposition also complicated the examination.
Ben Crump Calls for Transparency
Speaking before a packed audience at the NAACP National Convention, attorney Ben Crump emphasized that the autopsy raises more questions than answers.
“This is only another part of the puzzle,” Crump said, adding that the family still needs access to additional evidence gathered by Mississippi authorities. He called on investigators to release information that could help determine exactly what happened to the teenager.
Crump also stressed that the family’s independent investigation remains active and that they will continue seeking answers until every question surrounding Nolan’s death has been addressed.
Questions Continue About Friends’ Actions
Public scrutiny continues to focus on the group of friends who accompanied Wells to Horn Island on July 4.
According to investigators, the friends told authorities they believed Wells had decided to remain on the island and would find another ride back to the mainland. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said the group has cooperated with investigators throughout the case.
However, Wells’ family and supporters continue to question why his friends allegedly left without him, took his phone and keys, and did not immediately report him missing. Those unanswered questions have fueled widespread speculation online, although no criminal charges have been filed and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
Emotional Farewell at Nolan Wells’ Funeral
Just two days before the independent autopsy results were released, hundreds gathered in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to celebrate Nolan Wells’ life.
The funeral featured emotional tributes from family, friends, and civil rights leaders, including Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy. Sharpton urged investigators to continue pursuing every lead and criticized what he described as inconsistencies in the early stages of the investigation.
He questioned why investigators indicated there was no evidence of foul play before the investigation had concluded and echoed the family’s demand for transparency and accountability.
Despite the grief, Wells’ loved ones remembered him as a bright young man whose life touched countless people in his community.
Investigation Continues
Mississippi authorities have not yet released the results of the state’s official autopsy, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains ongoing. Once completed, the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury under standard procedure.
Meanwhile, a $125,000 reward funded by Rev. Al Sharpton, Tyler Perry, and Terrell Owens remains available for information leading to an arrest and conviction if criminal wrongdoing is ultimately discovered.
For now, Nolan Wells’ family says they will continue fighting for answers, hoping the remaining evidence will finally explain how the promising 18-year-old lost his life.
