Grammy-winning R&B singer Muni Long has revealed that she underwent a life-saving double lung transplant after doctors told her she had only one week to live.
The shocking revelation came during an emotional interview on Good Morning America, where the 37-year-old singer opened up about the serious health battle that forced her to exit Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine Tour” in 2025. Long, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014, said she became severely ill while on the road and eventually developed pneumonia.
According to Long, her health rapidly deteriorated during the tour, making it increasingly difficult for her to perform. She recalled barely making it through her final show before returning home for Thanksgiving. Shortly afterward, she woke up in a hospital surrounded by doctors who delivered devastating news: without a lung transplant, she had only a week to live.
Initially, the “Made for Me” singer struggled with the decision. As a vocalist, she worried about how a double lung transplant might affect her voice and career. However, thinking about her young son ultimately helped her prioritize her health and future.
Doctors presented Long with two options — enter hospice care or undergo the transplant. Faced with the life-or-death decision, she chose surgery. The operation was successful, and six months later, Long says she is feeling “fabulous,” reporting no symptoms or infections as she continues her recovery.
The singer also revealed that she underwent vocal surgery and is closely monitoring her recovery to determine when she can return to performing. Despite her concerns, Long shared that her voice may have actually improved following the procedures. She has already released new music, including her latest single, “The Riches.”
Long hopes that by sharing her story, she can encourage others—especially Black women living with lupus and other chronic illnesses—to listen to their bodies, seek medical attention when something feels wrong, and prioritize their health.
Her remarkable recovery serves as a testament to resilience, faith, and the importance of making life-saving decisions when faced with unimaginable circumstances.
