Fans attending the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture are in for a special celebration as hip-hop icon Missy Elliott prepares to pay tribute to her longtime friend and collaborator Aaliyah during the festival’s highly anticipated Sunday Flowers tribute.

According to ESSENCE, the tribute will take place during the festival’s closing night festivities and will celebrate the life, music, and enduring legacy of Aaliyah, while also commemorating the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking album One in a Million.

Missy Elliott played a pivotal role in shaping Aaliyah’s career, collaborating with her on several classic records, including “One in a Million” and “If Your Girl Only Knew.” Their creative partnership helped redefine the sound of contemporary R&B and influenced a generation of artists.

The tribute carries added significance because Aaliyah was part of the very first ESSENCE Festival in 1995, performing alongside music legends and helping establish the event as one of the premier celebrations of Black culture and music.

While organizers have yet to reveal the full lineup of performers participating in the tribute, ESSENCE has promised special guests and memorable performances that will honor the beloved singer’s impact on music, fashion, and culture. With Missy Elliott curating the celebration, fans can expect an emotional and unforgettable salute to the artist affectionately known as “Baby Girl.”

The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture will take place July 3-5 in New Orleans, featuring performances from artists including Cardi B, Kehlani, Patti LaBelle, Latto, and Brandy & Monica, among others.

For many fans, the tribute will serve as a powerful reminder of Aaliyah’s timeless influence and the special bond she shared with Missy Elliott—one that continues to resonate throughout music more than two decades after her passing.
