Michael Wright, ‘The Five Heartbeats’ Star, Dies at 70

The world of film and television is mourning the loss of acclaimed actor Michael Wright, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Eddie King Jr. in the beloved 1991 film The Five Heartbeats. Wright died at the age of 70.

Born April 30, 1956, in New York, Wright attended the now-defunct New Lincoln School before studying acting at the renowned Lee Strasberg Institute. He began his professional career in 1979 as Clinton in Philip Kaufman’s cult classic The Wanderers.

Wright’s breakthrough came with his powerful performance as Carlyle in Robert Altman’s 1983 war drama Streamers. His work in the film earned him one of the most prestigious honors of his career: the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1983 Venice Film Festival. Wright shared the honor with Matthew Modine, Mitchell Lichtenstein, David Alan Grier, Guy Boyd and George Dzundza.

He also became familiar to television audiences through the original V television franchise, portraying Elias Taylor in VV: The Final Battle and V: The Series.

But for generations of Black movie lovers, Wright will forever be remembered as Eddie King Jr. in The Five Heartbeats. Directed by and starring Robert Townsend, the 1991 musical drama featured Wright alongside Townsend, Harry Lennix, Leon Robinson and Tico Wells.

Wright brought intensity, passion and vulnerability to Eddie King, helping make the character one of the most memorable figures in the film. Decades after its release, The Five Heartbeats remains a beloved piece of Black film culture, with Wright’s performance continuing to resonate with audiences.

His other film credits included The PrincipalSugar Hill, opposite Wesley Snipes, and the 1997 comedy Money Talks, starring Chris Tucker and Charlie Sheen.

Wright later delivered another acclaimed performance as the intimidating Raynathan “Ray” Skuggs in Sugar Hill. From 2001 to 2003, he portrayed troubled inmate Omar White on HBO’s acclaimed prison drama Oz, appearing in 22 episodes.

His later television work included appearances in Rel and Black Lightning, where he portrayed Lazarus Prime.

Wright’s wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his death and shared a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram.

“It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright,” she wrote, describing him as a husband and father.

Susan said Wright was the father of Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr and Sir Barr, and a grandfather to Yoko. She asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve and specifically requested that people refrain from sharing unconfirmed information or speaking on behalf of the family.

She added that the family would share additional details about Wright’s life, legacy and plans to honor him when they are ready.

His The Five Heartbeats co-star Leon Robinson also paid tribute to Wright.

“We made History together, we were honored together, you made your mark and for that you will be remembered, my friend. Michael Wright RIP,” Robinson wrote.

For fans who grew up watching The Five Heartbeats, Wright’s passing is particularly heartbreaking. His portrayal of Eddie King Jr. was more than a performance—it became part of the soundtrack of a generation and helped cement the film as an enduring classic.

For a career spanning nearly five decades, Michael Wright left behind a remarkable body of work across film and television. From The Wanderers and Streamers to VThe Five HeartbeatsSugar HillOz and Black Lightning, his talent touched audiences across generations.

Michael Wright was 70.
