Nipsey Hussle Square

Los Angeles Officially Renames Iconic Intersection in Honor of Nipsey Hussle

In a powerful tribute to the late rapper, community leader, and entrepreneur, city officials, famil,y and supporters gathered this weekend to officially rename a historic South Los Angeles intersection “Nipsey Hussle Square.” The corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue — long a symbolic heart of the neighborhood — now bears the name of Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom, honoring his legacy of artistic achievement and community investment.

The renaming ceremony took place Saturday at 10 a.m. local time, with a new sign unveiled at the plaza adjacent to The Marathon Clothing, the store Hussle owned and operated before he died in 2019. Family members, including his brother, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom, community activists, and elected officials attended the event, which marked a milestone in Los Angeles’ ongoing efforts to recognize Hussle’s lifetime impact.

City leaders, including Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilmember Heather Hutt, and California State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, spoke about Hussle’s deep ties to the neighborhood, his work to uplift residents, and his belief in community-driven change. The plaza also serves as the home of the Neighborhood Nip Foundation, the organization his family continues to champion.

“For decades this corner has been more than a crossroads — it’s been a gathering place, a point of pride and a testament to what dedicated people can build from within,” Harris-Dawson said. “Today, Los Angeles ensures that Nipsey’s name and spirit will forever be part of our city’s story.”

Hussle, who was fatally shot outside his store in March 2019, quickly became a beloved figure not only for his music but also for his work as an entrepreneur and advocate for economic development in South L.A. His efforts included opening local businesses, hiring community members, and championing long-term neighborhood revitalization.

The official designation of Nipsey Hussle Square builds on earlier tributes, including a 2019 co-naming motion by the Los Angeles City Council and recent Metro honors such as special station branding and commemorative TAP cards. For many residents, naming the intersection cements Hussle’s influence in the place where he lived, worked, and inspired others.

The Marathon continues — in name and spirit.
