A Florida family is mourning 5-year-old Bellamy Dawkins-Morris, who died after a large interactive display board fell on him at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, according to school officials. Bellamy suffered critical injuries and was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Family Seeks Answers
Bellamy’s family is seeking answers about why the approximately 120-pound Promethean board fell.
Relatives told local media that Bellamy’s mother was reportedly informed he had been moving the board back and forth while students lined up before it tipped over. The family said Bellamy was autistic and questioned whether the equipment was properly secured and whether he was adequately supervised.
“We need answers, and we need them immediately,” Bellamy’s great-aunt, Miriam Rodriguez, told WESH 2.
The family is seeking accountability and has indicated that relatives are pursuing legal counsel.
District Announces Safety Reviews
Brevard Public Schools said staff called 911 and began emergency lifesaving measures immediately after the board fell. The district expressed condolences to Bellamy’s family, classmates, teachers and the school community.
The district also announced inspections of similar display boards across its campuses. The review includes inspections by district technology staff and the installation contractor, an independent safety assessment, and a pause on new installations.
Officials said the boards were installed by a licensed third-party vendor according to manufacturer guidelines. Promethean has expressed condolences and said it is cooperating with the investigation.
Palm Bay police are investigating how the board fell. Authorities have described the incident as a tragic accident but said the investigation remains ongoing. No final findings have been announced.
