A Georgia family is demanding answers after their 2-year-old daughter suffered a devastating foot injury while at daycare, ultimately resulting in the amputation of one of her toes.
According to WSB-TV, Jynesis Daniel was at Willoway Preschool in McDonough, Georgia, on August 21 when a fire extinguisher reportedly came loose from a wall and fell onto her foot. Her parents, Zacheus and LaTiegre’ Daniel, received a call from the childcare center informing them that an ambulance was being called.
Jynesis was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Arthur M. Blank Hospital, where doctors determined that she had suffered a serious injury to her toes.
Her father recalled the frightening moment he learned how badly his daughter had been hurt, saying the sides of her toes appeared to be dangling and barely attached to her foot.
The toddler underwent two surgeries. Doctors initially attempted to reattach the damaged toes and monitored her foot for 24 hours. However, one of the toes did not recover.
According to her father, the toe remained black and blue, and doctors ultimately determined that it needed to be amputated to protect the rest of Jynesis’ foot from infection.
The incident has left the Daniel family facing what Jynesis’ mother described as a life-changing situation.
The family has reported the incident to Henry County police and has retained an attorney. Meanwhile, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) confirmed that Willoway Preschool reported the incident and that the agency is investigating.
The daycare has also faced a previous disciplinary matter. WSB-TV reported that state records show DECAL fined Willoway Preschool following an April incident in which another 2-year-old child was left outside unattended for 26 minutes. That earlier incident is separate from Jynesis’ injury, and the current investigation has not established whether any violation caused the August accident.
The owner of Willoway Preschool told WSB-TV that the health and safety of Jynesis and the other children remain the center’s priority but declined to comment further because of ongoing litigation.
For the Daniel family, the focus now is accountability and making sure other children are protected.
LaTiegre’ said she would like to see the preschool shut down, while Zacheus said he wants those responsible to be held accountable for what happened to his daughter.
The state investigation remains ongoing, and no determination of wrongdoing has been announced.
