A 15-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree murder after authorities say she was among three people who pushed a man from a moving Chicago Transit Authority Red Line train, causing his death.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Kyle Bickham, who was reportedly on his way home from work when the deadly incident occurred on September 7 near the CTA’s 69th Street station.
According to Chicago police, an altercation broke out aboard the moving train at approximately 2:30 p.m. Investigators allege that three individuals used force against Bickham before he was pushed from the train.
Bickham fell onto the electrified third rail and was subsequently struck by another train. His death was ruled a homicide.
Police arrested the 15-year-old girl on Friday, September 11. Because she is a juvenile, authorities have not publicly released her name.
She faces felony charges including first-degree murder, mob action, murder by other forcible felony and aggravated battery to a transit employee, according to CBS News Chicago.
The teenager appeared in juvenile court Saturday, where a judge found probable cause on the charges and ordered her held in custody. She returned to court Monday and was again ordered detained until her next hearing in October.
Authorities have not announced arrests of the other two people who investigators believe were involved in the fatal attack.
Bickham’s family is now demanding answers and calling on the other individuals involved, as well as anyone who witnessed the incident, to come forward.
His loved ones described him as a caring and hardworking man who was devoted to his family. Bickham had reportedly been working at an Amazon warehouse in Cicero and was returning home when the deadly confrontation occurred.
During a gathering at the 69th Street station, Bickham’s family also questioned how the altercation was able to escalate into a fatal incident aboard a moving train.
His brother, Christopher Bickham Jr., said the family wants the other people involved to turn themselves in, adding that he has already forgiven those responsible.
The investigation remains ongoing as Chicago police continue working to identify and locate the other individuals allegedly involved.
