13-Year-Old Sha’Michael Russell to Receive Youth Heroism Award After Dying Shielding His Sister

A Louisiana teenager who died protecting his younger sister from gunfire is being remembered as a hero. Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Sha’Michael Russell was among three children shot on September 28 at the Olde Salem Village Apartments in Shreveport, Louisiana. According to his family, when gunfire erupted near the apartment complex’s basketball court, Russell placed himself between the bullets and his 3-year-old sister. He was fatally wounded and later died at a hospital.

His sister survived.

Russell’s aunt, Jessica Haley, a chaplain with the Shreveport Police Department, described him as loving and selfless.

“He was shielding his 3-year-old sister at the park to keep her from being hit by the bullets,” Haley said.

Family members remembered Russell as a playful, caring child who loved sports and gospel music, made people laugh and helped others. He was also known for assisting neighbors and bringing humor wherever he went.

Honored With Youth Heroism Award

In recognition of his bravery, the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, formerly known as The Uvalde Foundation for Kids, will posthumously present Russell with its Youth Heroism Award.

Russell will be the first teenager to receive the national award posthumously. The award honors young people who demonstrate exceptional courage, compassion and a willingness to help others during a crisis.

Daniel Chapin, the foundation’s founder and president, said Russell’s family wanted him remembered for who he was beyond the circumstances of his death.

“Sha’michal’s family has told us about a boy who loved his little sister and tried to protect her,” Chapin said. “He was only 13 years old. He should still be here growing up with his family.”

The foundation also launched an emergency fundraiser to help Russell’s family with funeral and memorial expenses and potentially support the other children and families affected by the shooting.

Two Cousins Arrested

Shreveport police say 19-year-old cousins Javion Abbott and Alonzo Abbott have been arrested.

Javion Abbott faces charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Alonzo Abbott is charged with principal to second-degree murder and two counts of principal to attempted second-degree murder.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests or charges are possible.

The shooting also injured two other children, ages 2 and 17.

Russell’s family is mourning a life cut short. Those who knew him want him remembered not only for how he died, but also for his humor, kindness and love for his family.
