Sterling K. Brown is stepping up to the plate for his next big-screen project! The Emmy-winning actor has joined Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in The Comebacker, Sony Pictures’ upcoming baseball film directed by Marielle Heller.
Brown will portray the team’s manager in the upcoming production, joining a cast that also includes Patricia Clarkson and Amy Madigan. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 30, 2027.
A Baseball Story About Second Chances
Based on a short story by Dave Eggers from his collection The Forgetters, The Comebacker centers on the world of professional baseball and the relationships that develop around the game.
Tom Hanks stars as a New York Mets pitching coach, while Callum Turner plays a young pitcher whose life takes an unexpected turn after being struck by a line drive while on the mound. In baseball, that type of hit is known as a “comebacker.” The story explores the connections between the players and the people who help guide them through the challenges of the sport.
Heller wrote the screenplay and is reuniting with Hanks after directing him in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Hanks is also producing the film through his Playtone banner alongside producer Gary Goetzman, while Heller’s producing partner Leah Holzer is producing through Defiant By Nature. The project is being developed in cooperation with Major League Baseball.
Sterling K. Brown Continues His Hollywood Run
Brown’s addition to The Comebacker adds another major project to an already busy career. The acclaimed actor currently stars in and executive produces Hulu’s drama series Paradise and received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting performance in American Fiction. His other upcoming projects include The Gallerist and the live-action adaptation of Voltron.
The film has also attracted attention over reports that entertainer Bad Bunny and Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo are considering roles. Their potential involvement has not been confirmed.
With Hanks leading the cast, Brown joining as the team’s manager and Heller directing, The Comebacker is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the baseball-movie lineup.
Y’all Know What?! will be watching for more updates as the film moves toward its 2027 release.
