Stacey Abrams Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize

Stacy Abrams, the former Georgia gubernatorial Democratic candidate, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize recognizes outstanding achievements across the world.

Abrams and her organization Fair Fight Action played an integral role in increasing the Black voter turnout for the 2020 presidential election and the 2021 Senate runoff.

Abrams’ fight against voter suppression began in 2014, when she launched the New Georgia Project to get unregistered Black Georgians signed up to vote in the midterm elections that year.

Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party politician in Norway’s Parliament compared Abrams work to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s legacy.

“Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society,” Haltbrekken said.

King won the award in 1964.

It is widely expected that Abrams will soon announce a second bid for Georgia’s governorship. No Black woman has been elected a state’s governor.

The last U.S. winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was former President Obama in 2009.

There are usually three winners each year and the awards are handed out on December 10, the anniversary date of Alfred Nobel’s (the creator) death.

Each winner gets cash prize, a gold medal, and a personal diploma. In 2020, the award is an equivalent of over $1 million.

Congratulations, Stacey Abrams! What an honor.
