Second Parkland Shooting Survivor Who Died Of An Apparant Suicide Has Been Identified

The second survivor of the Parkland, Florida, mass school shooting who committed suicide since this past week was identified by his family Tuesday as Calvin Desir.

Desir was 16-years old at the time of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Mass Shooting. He died Saturday night, while the other survivor, Sydney Aiello, 19, took her own life the Sunday before.

Authorities had not released his name at first, but he was identified by his sister, Brittany Wright, on a GoFundMe page the family created.

“My family is grieving over the loss of a wonderful and amazing son, brother, nephew, and friend. We are raising money to support all funeral cost for my brother. He was a fellow student at Stoneman Douglas with strong aspirations of one day becoming an engineer, which inspired him to always find new projects around the house to challenge his skills,” she wrote.

“I can tell you firsthand that he was one of a kind, very soft-spoken, and never once hurt a fly. If you ever asked him to do the simplest task, he was right on it. His selflessness and quick action to help others is something that we all deeply admired,” she continued.

“Calvin Desir was truly special to us all and will forever live on in our hearts. We love you Calvin!”

The circumstances surrounding the student’s death are not clear. It’s also not certain whether the apparent suicide was related to last year’s mass shooting.

But after the loss of two Stoneman Douglas survivors to suicide, community leaders urge parents everywhere to be vigilant and proactive in talking to their kids about trauma.

Ryan Petty has a child that died and another that survived from the Parkland Shooting. He suggested asking questions that will bring awareness.

Questions such as:

– Have you wished you could go to sleep and not wake up?

— Have you thought about hurting yourself?

— Have you thought about how you might accomplish this?

“They can be part of the solution,” he said. “We really need to drive awareness. We need to make sure that everyone, especially parents, understand their child or loved one may be at risk.”
