His sister Tamara Powell, who is a Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, shared the heartbreaking news in a statement on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother and uncle Jesse Powell. He passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home,” the statement said.

A cause of death hasn’t been revealed. Jesse was 51.

His family wanted it to be known that Jesse loved music and he especially loved his fans who supported him throughout his career. “We want you all to know that you meant the world to him.”

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Jesse started his singing career with his two younger sisters, Trina, Tamera, and brother Jacob.

Jesse caught the eye of eventual collaborator and producer Carl Roland while performing at local talent shows with his siblings in the early 1990s.

While he would go on to enjoy moderate success Trina and Tamara would also win a recording contract as a duo, with their own self-titled debut album released in 1999.

Jesse received recognition following the release of his first album and its lead single, “You,” in 1996.

Co-written by Jesse and Carl, the track would climb to number 59 in the US Billboard Chart before enjoying further success upon its re-release in 1999.

Reappearing on the singer’s second album ‘Bout it, the song soon became the most successful of his career by reaching number two in the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 10 in the Billboard Hot 100.

Other songs released via Silas Records/MCA included the singles “All I Need,” “Gloria” and “I Like It.”

Jesse, who was credited with a four octave vocal range, released four albums and was nominated for a Grammy.

Fans are shocked and saddened by the passing of one of the greatest singers in the world, who has given us a timeless hit.

Sending condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jesse.
