Quinta Brunson Set To Develop and Star in New ‘Betty Boop’ Movie

Quinta Brunson is stepping into the world of animation in a major way. The Emmy-winning creator and star of Abbott Elementary is developing and starring in a new feature film centered on the iconic cartoon character Betty Boop.

According to reports, the project is being developed through Brunson’s production company, Fifth Chance Productions, alongside Fleischer Studios. The film will reportedly explore the origins and evolution of Betty Boop through the eyes of her creator, animator Max Fleischer.

Rather than focusing solely on the animated icon herself, the movie is expected to examine the relationship between Fleischer and his creation while highlighting the pressures of fame, creativity, and commercial success as Betty Boop became one of the world’s earliest cartoon superstars.

In a statement shared with Variety, Brunson described Betty Boop as “one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters,” adding that the character has maintained a lasting cultural influence for nearly a century. Brunson said she became interested in telling a deeper story after meeting with Mark Fleischer and learning more about the character’s creation.

Mark Fleischer also praised Brunson’s vision for the project, saying the actress embodies many of Betty Boop’s signature qualities, including humor, compassion, intelligence, and charm.

Originally introduced in the 1930s by Fleischer Studios, Betty Boop became one of animation’s most recognizable figures, known for her flapper-inspired style and groundbreaking presence in early cartoons. Betty Boop has remained a pop culture staple for decades through merchandise, television appearances, and recent stage adaptations like Boop! The Musical.

The new film marks another major career move for Brunson, whose success with Abbott Elementary has made her one of Hollywood’s most sought-after creators and performers.
