Panhandler Did Not Kill Good Samaritan, Her Husband and Stepdaughter Allegedly Committed the Crime

Remember the horrific story of Baltimore engineer Jacquelyn Smith’s murder? If not, let us refresh your memory.

Jacquelyn Smith’s 52-year old husband, Keith Smith, called 911 on December 1, saying she had stopped her car to hand money to a needy woman with a baby when a man approached. He said the man reached for her wallet, fatally stabbed her in a struggle, and fled with the woman and baby.

This frightened many Americans including, Oprah Winfrey. She tweeted: “This story struck my heart. I’ve done this a 1k times. But will think twice before ever doing again.”

The Baltimore Sun reported in December that Keith said he wanted to get a law passed banning panhandling, in memory of his wife. The newspaper noted that Baltimore already has a ban on soliciting money from motorists.

But the investigation took a twist Sunday when her husband, Keith Smith and his 28-year old daughter, Valeria Smith, were taken into custody by Texas authorities in Harlingen, near the Mexican border.

After thorough investigation, Baltimore police said that this story was completely false and points to this father and daughter duo as Jacquelyn’s murders.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh stated, “These individuals took advantage of a situation, a city that is already dealing with its own problems. So we are looking forward to this cruel act being brought to justice.”

The case is still under investigation so evidence will not be released to the public at this time. The suspects are still in custody.
