Ohio Student Banned From Prom For Using A Racist Sign In Promposal

An Ohio teen has been banned from prom for holding a racist sign while asking his potential date to the annual school event. The photo of this Clear Fork High School student holding the sign was posted on Snapchat and it read:

“If I was black I’d be picking cotton but I’m white so I’m picking u for prom.”

We won’t name the student because he’s received a number of death threats since the posting.

“What I thought was, how disappointing — this is in 2019 — we are still dealing with this stuff, with racial slurs,” Clear Fork Valley Local Schools Superintendent Janice Wyckoff told CNN.

Although the student’s family has declined to make a statement, the superintendent said the student apologized on his social media.

“I’m sorry for upsetting anyone, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m really sorry, I will say sorry to anyone,” he wrote, according to Wyckoff. “I didn’t mean to hurt you or anything like that, it was just for a laugh. I’m sorry, I really am. I’ll say it to your face or anything really.”

We’re unsure if the young lady he asked to the prom accepted his promposal; regardless, he will not be attending.

As some of you may recall, there was another promposal that stirred up on social media due to its racial language. Three young girls — 2 white teens and 1 black young lady in the middle — holding this sign.

The father of the teen on the right told Local 10 News that the promposal originated as an “inside joke.” The teen in the middle, who is homeschooled and heir to a cotton farm in Alabama, was originally not going to prom. The Monarch High School students have been suspended. The father also said several didn’t believe the sign had malicious intent and the girls wanted to apologize.

So what do you all think of these promposals? Do you think suspending them from school and banning them from prom is a good enough lesson? Leave us a comment below.
