A newlywed couple lost their lives Wednesday evening after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana State Police said.
The victims were identified as 35-year-old Alyssia Stewart and her 37-year-old husband, Dusharne Stewart, both of Prairieville. The couple were traveling together in a 2017 Nissan Altima when the crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near milepost 169 on I-10 East.
According to investigators, a 2022 Ford F-250 was traveling eastbound in the left lane when it struck the rear of the Nissan, which was traveling in the same lane. The impact pushed the Nissan into a Kia Carnival, which then struck a 2023 GMC Yukon.
Alyssia, who was driving the Nissan, and Dusharne, who was riding as a passenger, were both properly restrained. They were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The driver of the Kia was also properly restrained and suffered moderate injuries. The drivers of the Ford and GMC were not injured, according to Louisiana State Police.
The heartbreaking loss has prompted an outpouring of condolences for the couple, with social media posts identifying Alyssia and Dusharne as newlyweds. One post described the tragedy as the loss of a young couple who had not even been married for a year.
Authorities have not yet determined why the Ford struck the Nissan. Louisiana State Police said routine toxicology samples will be collected and analyzed to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash.
Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
