Mother Of Atatiana Jefferson Passes Away In Home Her Daughter Was Murdered
The family of Atatiana Jefferson is mourning another loss. Yolanda Carr, mother of the young woman shot in her Dallas home, has passed away.
Yolanda Carr, Atatiana Jefferson’s mother, has died, an attorney representing the family said.
An attorney representing the family broke the news.
According to Dallas Morning News, medical personnel were called to Carr’s home in the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue in Fort Worth on Thursday morning.
Her death comes months after her daughter was fatally shot by a Fort Worth police officer at the same house in October.
The cause of death hasn’t been released, but the 55-year old had been battling an illness. At the time Jefferson was fatally shot in October, she had moved in with her mother to be her caretaker.
Carr, who had been in declining health, did not attend Jefferson’s funeral but wrote a tribute for her daughter.
Jefferson’s father, 58-year-old Marquis Jefferson, also passed away. He suffered a heart attack and died Nov. 9, about two weeks after his daughter’s funeral.
Lee Merritt, an attorney for the family, said the recent months have been difficult for the family as they’ve gone “from one tragedy to the next.” He said he wouldn’t speculate on the cause of Carr’s death but noted that he has seen similar situations involving families of the victims of police shootings.
“Unfortunately, as a civil-rights attorney dealing with wrongful death, I see this often where families have medical issues usually related to the trauma experienced due to police brutality,” Merritt said.
“She lost her support system when Atatiana was killed,” Merritt said.
