Missy Elliott to Present Inaugural HBCU Band Battle in Virginia

Missy Elliott is bringing the energy, creativity and tradition of HBCU marching bands to her home state of Virginia with the inaugural Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle.

The showcase will take place Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 4 p.m. at William “Dick” Price Stadium on the campus of Norfolk State University. The event will bring together four prominent HBCU marching bands for a celebration of music, school pride, musicianship and Black collegiate culture.

The lineup includes Norfolk State University’s Spartan Legion, Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion, Elizabeth City State University’s Sound of Class and Hampton University’s Marching Force.

Celebrating HBCU Band Culture

HBCU marching bands have long been a major part of the culture surrounding Black colleges and universities, with performances extending beyond halftime shows to include the tradition of the “fifth quarter,” where bands showcase elaborate arrangements, choreography and musical creativity.

For Elliott, a Virginia native and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, bringing the celebration home is especially meaningful.

“Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,” Elliott said. “HBCU bands have always brought so much energy, creativity, and culture to music. I want this to be a celebration of them and something that inspires the next generation to dream even bigger.”

The event is part of a larger weekend celebrating Elliott’s influence on music, fashion, culture and her home state. Missy Elliott Day was established in Virginia in 2022, recognizing her contributions to entertainment and her connection to the state.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The weekend will also feature the Missy Elliott Innovation Summit, an educational program designed for college students and high school seniors.

The summit will explore the intersection of technology, music, education, entrepreneurship and creative innovation, giving young people an opportunity to engage with ideas and opportunities shaping the future of the creative industries.

The HBCU Band Battle continues Elliott’s long-standing connection to Virginia and her efforts to give back to communities in her home state. Her relationship with Norfolk State also includes receiving an honorary doctorate from the university in 2022 and delivering its commencement address.

With four talented HBCU bands taking the field, the inaugural Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle promises to be a celebration of the musical excellence, creativity and traditions that make HBCU culture so influential.
