Maiesha Rashad, First Lady Of Go-Go, Has Passed Away After Battling Stomach Cancer
Maiesha Rashad, D.C.’s leading lady of go-go, died Monday evening after battling stomach cancer for five months, a family member said.
According to a family member, Maiesha was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer back in February. She was living with her family until 10 days ago, when she was placed in hospice care. She passed away at the facility. She previously received chemotherapy treatments at Suburban Hospital.
I’m sad to share this with you guys, but #MaieshaRashad the #FirstLadyofGogo lost her battle to stomach cancer tonight. A few months ago when she was diagnosed I sat down with her family & friends to talk about Mai’s incredible legacy. @wusa9 https://t.co/bzqBQApZDz

Maiesha led a band of bell-bottom and afro-wearing musicians in the 90s. They called themselves Maiesha Rashad and the Hip Huggers.
Maiesha was also a talented composer and producer. She was an educator, a jingle singer, a band leader, choir director, and she recorded with the late Luther Vandross and traveled the globe performing with jazz legend, Norman Connors and harpist, JeffMajors.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Maiesha back in March to seek medical financial assistance. The family revealed that Maiesha was in extreme pain but had to be released from the hospital because of insurance.
Sending our deepest condolences to the family. Rest in peace, queen.
