Legendary ‘Jurassic Park’ Actor Sam Neill Dies at 78

Beloved New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.

Neill’s family announced his passing on July 13, 2026, sharing that he died in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones. The family described his death as “sudden and unexpected” while noting that he had remained cancer-free following his battle with a rare form of blood cancer.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Northern Ireland, Neill moved with his family to New Zealand as a child. He went on to build a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, becoming one of the most respected and versatile actors in film and television.

Neill gained worldwide recognition in 1993 when he portrayed paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, a role that made him a household name and cemented his place in cinematic history. He later returned to the character in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.

Beyond the dinosaur franchise, Neill delivered acclaimed performances in films including The PianoThe Hunt for Red OctoberDead CalmEvent Horizon, and A Cry in the Dark. He also earned praise for his television work, including his role as Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders.

In 2023, Neill revealed that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He continued working and sharing his experiences publicly, later announcing that he was cancer-free after treatment.
